Happy Healthy Mommy's Handmade Soap Making Class
I love teaching others how to make soap! I host hands on classes multiple times a year. Check out my facebook page for upcoming classes!
"Abigail’s soap class was exactly what I was looking for! It was hands-on and she clearly explained each step before we started. Abigail answered our many questions and made sure we left with a detailed list of what we would need to make our own soap. Her experience in soap making is evident!"- Trudy
Overview:
Soap is made by mixing fats and oils with lye between 110-120 degrees.
Step One:
Figure out your measurements of fats, oils, lye, and water. This is for a double batch where every single batch of soap should have 32 oz of fats/oils.
Tallow: 40 Oz. multiplied by the Lye ratio of .128 = 5.12
Olive Oil: 14 Oz. multiplied by the Lye ratio of .133 = 1.86
Coconut Oil: 10 Oz. multiplied by the Lye ratio of .178 = 1.78
----------
(Which we rounded to 8.7) Lye = 8.76
Each batch of soap is equal to 12 oz of water. For our class, we did double batches so we used 24 oz of water.
Step Two:
Mix the Lye with the water. The water will warm up to 180 degrees. Only sprinkle Lye on top of the water slowly while mixing.
Step Three:
Warm up the fats mixed into a pot until they are liquid and dissolved together.
Step Four:
Mix the lye water mixture with the fats when BOTH measure close between 110-120 degrees.
Step Five:
Blend the mixture until it becomes thick enough to watch lines form when you move your blender. Add your scents and pour them into the mold.
Step Six:
Cure soap 5 weeks before usage. The lye has to cure out of the soap so it doesn't burn your skin. This means you will need to store your soap in a paper bag in a closet during that time.
Are all the measurements for the oils and lye by weight or by volume? How about the water, liquid or weight measurements?
